BILLY, a forest ecologist with a PhD from The University of Hong Kong, focuses on ecological restoration in South China. He founded the Native Tree Nursery at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in 1998 to promote native plant species for forest restoration. In 2015, he established a 20 ha forest dynamic plot in Hong Kong's Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve under the CTFS-ForestGEO program to study forest responses to climate change globally. His current research focuses on carbon sequestration by native trees in Hong Kong. He has contributed significantly to urban biodiversity through ecological restoration projects and received the Landscape Policy and Research Award of the Landscape Institute in 2014 for his work on Hong Kong's street tree management plan. Teaching at HKU for over 20 years, BILLY is currently the Principal Lecturer and Programme Director of the MSc in Environmental Management. He initiated the HKU Eco-Leaders Training Programme in 2009, preparing students for field ecology expeditions worldwide. BILLY is a mentor of many young conservationists in Hong Kong and serves on various environmental committees and boards of the government and NGOs.
